A statement from the EWGGD to our Gaucher community...
"We hope that you are all well and managing in this time of unprecedented upheaval and uncertainty. We are sure that you as patients with Gaucher disease and clinicians caring for Gaucher patients are anxious to understand the risks associated with the coronavirus (covid-19).
Whilst many individuals who contract coronavirus will have mild symptoms it is apparent that some patients have a more severe course. The effect of Gaucher disease on the outcomes of coronavirus is not known however in general risk factors are believed to be older age, reduced immunity and pre-existing lung disease. We would therefore advise anyone with Gaucher who is over the age of 70, has lung involvement or splenectomy or has neuronopathic Gaucher disease (GD3) to seriously take the precaution of isolating themselves from others who might be carrying the virus. This might mean suspending your Gaucher treatment for a short while and we would encourage you to discuss this with your local physician.
To learn more about the effects of coronavirus in Gaucher disease the EWGGD is coordinating data collection. We will also host a webinar at 4pm GMT/5pm CET on 1 April to try to answer any questions. The EWGGD and IGA are here to support you so please do let us know your concerns."
