Report from the 5th regional Gaucher meeting in Zagreb

From September 29th till October 1st, 2023, the 5th regional Gaucher meeting was held in Zagreb, organized by the Croatian Gaucher Association. It is already a traditional gathering, the fifth in a row, after Čatež (2012), Sarajevo (2014), Belgrade (2016) and Struga (2019). The meeting was attended by patients, their family members, doctors and nurses from Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia. The final number of participants in the meeting was 118: Slovenia 22, Serbia 24, Montenegro 2, North Macedonia 16, Lithuania 1, Ukraine 1, Bosnia and Herzegovina 5, Croatia 47. During this gathering of patients and their doctors, nurses and other experts and family members who care for Gaucher patients, there were many opportunities for sharing experiences and education, all for the purpose of a better quality of life for people suffering from Gaucher disease.
At the very beginning of the regional meeting, representatives of patient associations from countries in the region presented the situation in each country. They talked about the number of patients, the availability of therapy and the activities of their associations. After that, representatives of the International Gaucher alliance presented news from their work with an emphasis on the volunteer program and the program for regional leaders.
After the first informative session, two educational sessions and three workshops followed. During each educational section, three lectures were held by eminent regional experts in Gaucher’s disease (Prof. Ivo Barić, Ph.D. (KBC Zagreb), Danijela Petković Ramadža, Ph.D. (KBC Zagreb), Prim. MSc. Sci. Dr. Mensuda Hasanhodžić (UKC Tuzla), Prof. Ivan Pećin, PhD (KBC Zagreb), Prof. Nadira Duraković, PhD (KBC Zagreb), Prof. Goran Čuturilo, PhD (University Children’s Hospital, Belgrade)). The topics of the lectures were: ‘Gaucher disease in children’, ‘Challenges in the treatment of neuropathic Gaucher disease in children’, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step’, ‘Changing the type of therapy and monitoring the success of therapy in patients with Gaucher disease ‘, ‘Reproductive health of patients with Gaucher disease’, ‘Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy with patients with rare diseases and family members’. Each lecture was followed by a dynamic discussion in which numerous patients and their family members actively participated. Three workshops were held on the following topics: ‘Transition from intravenous to oral therapy – patient experiences’, ‘Preventive physiotherapy’, ‘Application of enzyme replacement therapy in home conditions’. The workshops were interactive, extremely well attended and motivating.
During this meeting, the International Gaucher Disease Day (October 1) was also celebrated, and we tried to increase knowledge and awareness about Gaucher disease through the media. This year’s theme was ‘The power of knowledge in a timely diagnosis’, which means that the emphasis of the media campaign was precisely on early recognition of disease symptoms and timely diagnosis, which significantly improves the quality of life of patients. The promotion of the regional Gaucher meeting and the International Gaucher Day was done through the web portal, online editions of several media, the official Facebook and website of the Croatian Gaucher Association and the website of the meeting.
Six students of the Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, members of the CroMSIC student association, participated in the organization of the regional Gaucher meeting. In addition to the opportunity to help with the organization, this was a unique opportunity for the students to learn about one of the rare diseases, both from a clinical and patient perspective.
All this would not be possible without the help and support of our donors and sponsors (Takeda, Swixx, CroMSIC, Zagreb Tourist Board, International Gaucher Alliance, Croatian Association for Rare Diseases) to whom we would like to express our sincere thanks.
